Harvesting our efforts
The cold is here and our vegetable garden is a great success so far. In fact, each day proves it possible to live from a vegetable garden. If you are one person and would be willing to eat a plant based diet, in other words only fruits, vegetables and herbs, you can definitely live off your own garden.
Of course, you can not start living off your earth right away. You first need to plant and start a seasonal system. But once everything falls into place, it's easier than you might think. We are growing our food in about 16 square meters. It might take a little bit of planning, time and labour but would definitely be worth the trouble.
One thing that would be essential if you are leaning in that direction would be to document as much as possible,. For example your harvests (weight and time), growing patterns and sowing chart. This will allow you to understand your micro climate, soil and always have food waiting to be harvested.
The peas are starting to cover the entire vegetable garden. |
Our first sweet potato harvest, we still have two other plants to be harvested. |
Young fresh kale leaves. |
We have about 2 square meter of our garden where we are growing the baby spinach & swiss chard |
This month we have already harvested some beans, sweet potato, kale, radishes, baby spinach, swiss chard, oyster mushrooms and a lot of different herbs such as origanum, chives, rosemary and mint. From next month we will have a neat continuous supply of beautiful organic carrots. We simply can't wait!
